The arms of the town
The arms of the town are: “Argent, a mascle sable pierced by two serpent heads, the one in chief bending to the dexter, the one in base rising to the sinister.”
These arms can be found in an engraving by Claude de La Ruelle from 1611. One can recognize the mascle, which represents the mesh of a knight’s coat of mail.
As for the two serpent heads, it is assumed that they allude to the importance or to the inaccessible position of its fortress.
They recall the town’s motto, which appeared on the cushion bearing the Legion of Honour in 1919:
“I bite from behind as well as from before. Whoever touches me, gets stung.”
